Voice Your Support for SB 5123 - Establishing a Farm Internship Program in WA

Please! Call your WA State Representative in Olympia TODAY to voice your support for SB 5123, Establishing a farm internship program. This bill will help grow new farmers from the ground up. Your call is especially important if your representative sits on the House Labor & Workforce Development Committee. They hold a hearing on the bill tomorrow (Wed.). Tilth Producers of Washington says: Bill 5123
is aimed at educating new farmers, by establishing a pilot farm internship program.

 

Should the bill pass, small farms, after completing an application process would be allowed up to three interns at a time. Farms in the San Juan, Skagit, King, Whatcom, Kitsap, Pierce, Jefferson, Spokane, Yakima, Chelan, Grant, Kittitas, Lincoln, and Thurston counties would be eligible to participate. The farmers and interns must have a written agreement submitted to the department of labor and industries on housing, wages agreed to be paid if any, the scope of work that the intern will be performing, and the overall goals of the internship.

The bill passed the Senate on Tuesday, and is scheduled for a public hearing 8 a.m. Wednesday in the House. Please provide comments at the hearing in Olympia Wednesday morning on behalf of this bill; or contact your legislator to share your support.

Thanks for the Number Chris. I called today and said that I wanted to go on the record in support of the Farm bill. I found that in Mead my representatives are not on the committee so I just called Timm Ormsby.
