Food Forest Design and Care for Cities and Suburbs

with Toby Hemenway

Author: Mike Hagar (website host)
Food forests, or edible forest gardens, are life-filled places that not only provide food for people, but habitat for wildlife, carbon sequestering, biodiversity, natural soil building, beauty and tranquility, and a host of other benefits. This workshop covers the basics of designing, planting, and maintaining a many-layered woodland garden of fruit and nut trees, perennial and annual vegetables, and flowers. In this class Toby gives you both the theory behind food forests and a wealth of practical information, including which plants to use, where to start, and what to expect as your food forest grows.

How to Grow a Medicinal Food Forest

An On-Line Course presented by Michael (Skeeter) Pilarski

Author: Mike Hagar (website host)

Course Overview

Anyone with a patch of land can grow a food forest! A food forest, or forest garden, is a gardening technique that mimics a forest ecosystem but substitutes in edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. A medicinal food forest has the additional benefit of producing medicinal botanicals. Fruit and nut trees comprise the upper canopy of the forest while below are berry shrubs, edible perennials, herbs, root crops and annuals. Companion plants are included to attract beneficial insects, build the soil, and provide mulch. Together they create a sustainable forest garden ecosystem able to produce high yields of food with less maintenance.

In this course Michael Pilarski, permaculture and wildcrafting expert, teaches you how to turn your back yard into a food forest. Filmed on site in Michael’s back yard, this is not a classroom-based course. Michael teaches the basics of food forest planting while planting his own medicinal food forest on 1/8 of an acre. Does an 1/8 of an acre sound big to you? Don’t worry! In this course Michael talks about how to scale what you’re learning to your own back yard or land.

Crisis of Civilization

by Dr. Nafeez Mosadeqq Ahmed

Author: Mike Hagar (website host)

"The Crisis of Civilization is a remix documentary feature film investigating how global crises like ecological disaster, financial meltdown, dwindling oil reserves, terrorism and food shortages are converging symptoms of a single, failed global system."

This is a BRILLIANT synthesis by Dr. Ahmed on how we need to look at the converging crisis' of climate change, peak oil, food scarcity, the endless growth paradim and civilization as a single interelated process.  He is one of the most clear thinkers and communicators I have ever heard.   Well worth watching and sharing.  Did I mention that the use of old TV footage is hillarious and insightful.
